Those figures differ substantially between hardwood timber and composite, and the difference registers immediately in your freight cost.

1. Begin With Square Footage, Not Mat Quantity

Contractors frequently begin by approximating a mat quantity, but that approach conceals the estimating errors. Begin instead with the actual area requiring coverage, then convert that figure into mats.

For a continuous access roadway, multiply the length by the working width your equipment requires, so a 1,000 foot roadway at 16 feet wide represents 16,000 square feet. Calculate pads, laydown areas, and turnarounds separately, because those areas are typically wider than the roadway and they’re precisely where estimates prove insufficient.

A crane setup is measured the same way. Take the machine’s track or outrigger footprint, add the working clearance your lift plan specifies, and treat the result as an area requirement rather than a mat quantity. OSHA requires ground conditions firm, drained, and graded sufficiently to support the equipment, and the standard assigns the controlling entity responsibility for identifying hazards beneath the setup area. Coverage per mat is precisely where timber and composite specifications diverge.

  • Hardwood timber mats: A 4 foot by 16 foot mat covers 64 square feet. 8 inch mats run 16 and 18 feet, and those two sizes carry the deepest inventory. 12 inch mats run from 8 feet through 40 feet, so a 4 foot by 40 foot mat covers 160 square feet.

Mat dimensions additionally determine how the installation lays out. Timber mats are typically positioned perpendicular to the direction of travel, meaning a 16 foot mat produces a 16 foot working lane and every 4 feet of roadway length consumes one mat. A 1,000 foot lane therefore requires 250 mats. Composite mats set the same way give you a 14 foot lane, with each mat covering 8 feet.

3. Weight Determines Your Freight Bill

Coverage determines the mat quantity, while weight determines the delivery quantity, and freight is frequently the larger expenditure on a remote project.

It’s worth emphasizing that weight is never a reliable indicator of strength. Hardwood timber mats accommodate loading up to 200,000 pounds and composite mats are rated to distribute up to 650 psi. However, load capacity is not an inherent property of the mat. It depends on the mat, the ground beneath it, and the configuration on site.

Federal regulations cap interstate gross vehicle weight at 80,000 pounds, with a maximum 20,000 pounds on any one axle and 34,000 pounds on tandem axles. Those limitations appear in 23 CFR 658.17 and they include all enforcement tolerances. Once tractor and trailer tare weight comes off, a standard flatbed leaves roughly 48,000 pounds of legal payload, and that limitation governs every quantity below.

6. Where Matting Estimates Ordinarily Fall Short

Four adjustments account for the majority of shortfalls we routinely encounter.

  • Turnarounds and pull-offs. These exceed the lane width and they’re commonly omitted from preliminary calculations, so walk the corridor and calculate them separately.
  • Crane and equipment pads. A pad supporting stationary equipment is not roadway, and it frequently requires a heavier specification than the access corridor, so price it separately.
  • Overlap and edge loss. Timber mats positioned across uneven subgrade will not always butt together tightly, while composite mats connect using an overlapping stainless steel pin system that consumes a portion of nominal mat width. Add 5 to 10 percent for practical installation loss.
  • Reserve inventory on site. A practical strategy many contractors use is keeping a modest reserve at the laydown area, because a mat exchanged on Tuesday shouldn’t await a Thursday delivery.

7. Grading and Product Mix Affect the Calculation

Not every square foot of a project requires identical material, and purchasing as though it does inflates the total unnecessarily.

Viking evaluates used hardwood mats across a four tier grading scale. A Grade mats are brand new or effectively like new, exhibiting no large cracks, minimal corner and edge damage, and timbers positioned tightly against each other. B Grade mats represent good used inventory with no large breaks or breakoffs and no broken or exposed rods, with limited exceptions, although the timbers may demonstrate some movement. C Grade mats remain serviceable but appear cosmetically rough, with exposed rods and cracking acceptable within reason. Culls are no longer suitable for structural matting applications.

That scale enables matching grade directly against duty, and C Grade frequently performs adequately across a laydown area or an infrequently traveled pull-off, whereas the crane pad receives A Grade or B Grade inventory. On a purchase, freight runs one direction and the material remains yours. On a rental, freight runs both directions, effectively doubling the exposure across the calculations in section 4.
