Uses for Dragline Mats
Our mats are used most commonly for construction purposes, such as for creating temporary roadways and staging areas for construction equipment. However, there are many ways to get creative with them as well.
A couple of temporary road mats can turn into a temporary bridge across a creek or small body of water. They are highly effective for navigating flood zones for rescue workers.
We successfully provide solutions for the entire petroleum industry. Mats are needed in every sector to get oil and gas out of the ground. Other fields our dragline mats are used in are the Power Transmission & Distribution fields, Wind & Renewable Energy fields, Heavy Civil, and Marine fields.
Whether you work on roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, sewerage systems, pipelines, or railways, these 8” dragline mats will come in handy. Contact our team at Viking Mat today to discuss purchase and rent options.

Viking Mat timber mats are manufactured using dense, high-strength hardwood species, commonly including mixed hardwoods and oak. These materials are selected for their exceptional durability, natural resistance to decay, and ability to distribute heavy loads across soft or unstable ground conditions.
The strength and density of these hardwoods allow our mats to withstand repeated heavy equipment traffic while maintaining structural integrity and minimizing splintering or deformation. This makes them ideal for demanding applications such as pipeline construction, transmission line work, crane operations, and large-scale infrastructure projects.
Yes. Timber mat rentals are commonly used to protect environmentally sensitive areas such as wetlands and soft ground conditions. By distributing the weight of heavy equipment over a larger surface area, crane and access mats reduce ground pressure, helping prevent deep rutting and soil compaction.
Using timber mats also helps contractors meet environmental compliance requirements by minimizing site disturbance. When the project is complete, mats can be removed and graded to ensure the site is restored as closely as possible to its original condition.
For most projects lasting less than a year, renting timber mats is typically the most cost-effective option. Rental eliminates the long-term costs associated with ownership, including storage, maintenance, and transporting mats between job sites.
If project timelines change, flexible options such as lease-to-own or buy-back programs can provide additional financial efficiency. This allows contractors to adapt their mat strategy while ensuring they select the most economical solution for their specific project requirements.
Every timber mat in our rental fleet undergoes a thorough inspection by our experienced team before it is shipped to a jobsite. We evaluate each mat for bolt integrity, structural soundness, and overall surface condition to ensure it meets our performance standards.
Only mats that meet our strict criteria are approved for rental. This process ensures that even our used mats deliver the durability, stability, and reliability Viking Mat has been known for since 1910, providing a safe and dependable foundation for your crew and equipment.
